The Calgary Stampede

The Calgary StampedeThe History:

Back in 1912, Guy Weadick, envisioned a “Wild West Extravaganza” similar to the ones he had seen in the United States. He contacted the “Big Four” (Lane, McLean, Burns and Cross) and together they financed the first “Frontier Days” held in September of that year. The event was an enormous success and the tradition continues to this day.

In 1923 the Calgary Stampede hosted the first Chuckwagon Races, an event known today as the “Half Mile of Hell.” The Purses and prizes in 1923 totaled $275.00. In 1998 Calgary celebrated the 75th Anniversary of Chuckwagon Racing at the Stampede. Today’s drivers compete for $945,000 in day money and the sudden death winner takes home an additional $100,000.

The Calgary Stampede Today:

Today’s Calgary Stampede is a ten-day event that takes place in the heart of Calgary, Alberta and Stampede Park is only a 45 minute drive from the Rocking R Guest Ranch. The Stampede Parade features 160 entries from around the world and kicks off The Calgary Stampede in July of each year. The Calgary Stampede Rodeo is the main attraction of the Stampede and runs every afternoon. Each evening nine heats of 4 chuck wagons and 16 outriders compete for day money, followed by the Grandstand Show which features an amazing cast of musicians, dancers, singers and comedians. The evening concludes with a spectacular display of fireworks! The Calgary Stampede Midway has rides for everyone from small children to the most daring thrill seekers! In addition to all of this there are displays of Arts and Crafts and numerous Agricultural Events and Shows. For tickets to the 2009 Calgary Stampede visit: www.cs.calgarystampede.com

The Future of the Calgary Stampede:

Immediately following Stampede 2009, work will commence on the 65 million dollar state-of-the-art agriculture facility and re-development of 50 acres of Stampede Park. The development will facilitate the growing interest in the Calgary Stampede as a world class event. Each year more than one million visitors attend the Calgary Stampede.
